Auteur Theory - Spike Jonez

What is the signature of the director? Give examples from both videos. Using MEDIA LANGUAGE (micro areas) analyse how the signature has been created.

The term 'auteur' means that a directors film/music video etc reflects their creative vision. Their work would show signs of excessive use of the directors own visual perceptions through the use of signatures.
We have looked at two music videos directed by Spike Jonez, 'Otis' by Kanye West & Jay Z and 'Sky's The Limit' by Notorious B.I.G. We noticed in both these videos that Spike Jonez uses a lot of slow motion editing and direct address (when the artist sings directly into the camera). This being repeated throughout both videos shows to us that this is his signature style of editing. Another personal signature that we noticed was that he emphasised a lot on the artists themselves by the use of close ups and medium shots throughout the videos. The mise en scene helped create his signature as we noticed the use of cars in both videos which also conforms to the codes and conventions of hip hop and r'n'b videos. Another camera technique that Spike Jonez uses to create his signature is the use of a fish eye lense which was evident in both videos. This makes the artists look bigger on top and smaller on the bottom to focus on the artists face.
