9 Shot Analysis
The track I have chosen to analyse is 'Breathe' by Delilah. The 9 shots I have taken from this music video illustrate different codes and conventions within the genre of alternative pop.
In this music video the narrative showed a young couple having problems with their relationship. The representation of the characters were very stereotypical for example, the male character was the dominant figure this was shown through the close ups of the male character showing his aggresive emotion and the woman was portrayed as the object this was shown also through close ups illustrating her vulnerability for instance in the shot above when she is curled up in a bedroom, hiding away from everything. What's more, the male character was wearing gangsta like clothing such as the hoodie up and baggy jeans, emphasising his 'power' of the woman. Throughout the music video close ups are shown of the woman character showing her facial expression becoming more and more upset, this illustrating to the audience that the situation is becoming worse. For example in one of the images above the woman character is shown holding her breath underwater highlighting that she is stressed out and wants to get away from her situation.
Whilst there is a narrative happening in this music video the artist Delilah is in seperate scenes singing the track but she is not involved in the narrative. She emphasises the lyrics of the track showing the relationship between visuals and lyrics. She also is represented in a trendy/stylish way showing her individuality as an artist.
The colour palette throughout the music video is quite dark underlining that its not a cheerful song and there is more emotion to it. The editing is an important aspect to this music video as all the way through the track slow motion is used. It really stands out in the argument scene (shot in the centre above) the words of the characters are emphasised because of the slow motion editing. Also in some of the shots a blurred background is used this could be to highlight the character or the emotion of the character.
These 9 shots of Delilah music video have given me lots of ideas for my group and I. We want to conform to the genre of alternative pop and analyising this track has given me an idea of what to do in each micro area.
